Montana 5X5 Bull Elk 2010

Location: Southwest Montana.
Date: 24 October 2010

I shot this bull at about 7,000 feet elevation with a .340 Weatherby and 210 grain Nosler Partition bullets in Southwest Montana.  Tough animal.  He staggered about in the pines after the first shot, just behind the shoulder, and staggered yet more after the second that took him in the front of the neck. He laid down soon after.  I recovered one bullet and it was mushroomed down to the exposed partition wall. Range, perhaps 100-120 yards.

I owe great thanks to Donna and Jake McDonald of Upper Canyon Outfitters, Alder MT, and especially to two top notch elk guides upon whom the elk gods smile: Kerry Mullan and Rory Copeland (who is also a fine social philosopher).

You see me tired but happy.
